Ry Cooder played guitar and joined World Circuit producer Nick Gold and Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos González in the 1996 Havana sessions that became Buena Vista Social Club. “Producer discovers forgotten band” is misleading: the project assembled veteran Cuban musicians with substantial careers into a new all-star recording context.
Evidence
The official project history and Library of Congress recording essay identify Cooder’s guitar/production role alongside Gold and González. Cooder’s international profile helped the album travel, but the rhythmic, vocal, pianistic, and repertory authority belongs to the Cuban musicians and traditions heard on the record.
